NYFW fall 08/09: Marc Jacobs

What happened last season aside, the fall 2009 Marc Jacobs show to close New York Fashion Week was full of muted pastels and seemed like like it was a mix of last season’s Calvin Klein and Zac Posen collections.

The vibe of the show was built around Sonic Youth performing, much like Fashion Rocks, the models strutted around the band in the much anticipated collection.

While I’m hesitant to judge this collection (I’m very very undecided about what to think) check out what Fashion Verbatim had to say about the collection, and where Adrian thinks the inspirations came from.

Or watch the video below and come to your own conclusion.

NYFW fall 08/09: 3.1 Phillip Lim

The 3.1 Phillip Lim fall 2008/09 collection at New York Fashion Week showed how the designer was growing up with pieces that were more sophisticated than previous collections. Known for updating vintage romantic looks, Lim showed a collection that was full of grey pieces, carefully styled with romantic blouses, tuxedo pants, chic cropped coats and pencil skirts.

It wasn’t the most ground breaking collection, but I just fell in love with his final look - the white gown with scallop/bow detail just below the face. There was something utterly romantic about the piece. Add a tiara and one could be a princess in that gown.

NYFW fall 08/09: Why Rachel Zoe was not at Marc Jacobs

What is a fashion week without the gossip…

“Rachel Zoe was seen screaming and cursing because she couldn’t get into the Marc Jacobs show. She tried to fight her way in through the bouncers but they pushed her back. She ran off to her Town Car while the other celebs enjoyed mini bottles of Moët and an on-time show inside.”
– Reports NY Mag’s The Cut

Throw in the fact that Zoe was also missing from the Halston front row, perhaps things aren’t going too well for the stylist.

P.S. If you’re really bored, check out Zoe ignoring a guy with a camera because she hadn’t heard of the site. And here I thought you’re suppose to be nice to others in fashion, because everyone talks.

NYFW fall 08/09: Project Runway 4 finale show

Victoria Beckham is the guest judge for the Project Runway 4 finale show!

Look at her perched on her front row seat, sitting between Heidi Klum and Michael Kors in that bright orange creation with notepad in hand. One would think she wanted to stand out or something. Word has it that Posh had to call up and ask to be a guest judge - no one thought to call her people.

I wonder if Heidi is wearing Jordache jeans - I do love her bright yellow Christian Louboutin heels though.

Check out Jezebel if you want to find out who the final contestants were…

If Patricia Field were to style Hilary Clinton, she’d be in a straight jacket

The presidential election wasn’t too far from a FlyPaper blogger’s mind when she saw Sex and the City stylist, Patricia Field sitting front row at The Blondes show at New York Fashion Week.

When asked which candidate she would like to style, Field replied that Obama because he’s so good looking. Then she added that if she had to style Hilary Clinton, she would put her in a straight jacket.

Well someone isn’t a Clinton fan - check out the YouTube clip here.

On the flipside, Karl Lagerfeld was actually complimentary of Clinton’s style about a month ago to the press.

NYFW Fall 08/09: Matthew Williamson

As soon as I saw the start of this video, I just thought “Balenciagia’s florals in the spring 2008 collection were such a strong and influential trend that Matthew Williamson was inspired and ran with the idea”.

As for the rest of the collection? Check out the video and decide for yourself.

NYFW Fall 08/09: Proenza Schouler

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have been quite adept at setting runway trends at Proenza Schouler rather than following trends - or following on just slightly from what they did last season. And after last season’s hit military inspired collection, they have taken a new path for fall 2008/09 which was full of mini dresses with mixed fabric coats paired with coloured opaque tights.

It was the mix and match fabrics that caught my attention; heavy coats in wool, twill or velvet were accented with metallic panels and sequins, giving vintage coats a fresh and modern feel. My other favourites were the jewel toned silk mini dresses that came out featuring delicious folds of fabrics which created a great silhouette that translated into tops and jackets with the same fold detail. While wide trousers, opaque tights, coats that looked like they were inside out and metallic dresses finished off their looks for Fall 2009.

NYFW Fall 08/09: Herve Leger by Max Azria

The bandage dress to the Herve Leger brand is like the wrap dress to Diane von Furstenberg or the Monogram is to Louis Vuitton, and Max Azria evidently came to understand the bandage very well with the fall 2009 Herve Leger runway show at New York Fashion Week.

Skin tight bandage like dresses were sent out on the catwalk, given their classic form fitting touch, before adding new shilouettes, with heightened or lowered the hemlines. But it was the addition of the beading detail between the ‘imperfect’bandages that gave the dresses a subtle but luxurious feel and caught my eye. Ehile the feather capes, contrasting scribble-like detail and the addition of knits was a welcome and fresh Azria modernisation.

The pallete of dark greys to warm oranges, scarlet reds then black gave the collection a feeling of depth, but at the end it was the all about the va-va-voom factor the sexy bandage dresses exuded, and no doubt his celebrity front row crowd would agree.

Check out a video of the show below.
