The year that was 2007, the fashion highlights

Well it’s the end of 2007 and before we look onwards and upwards we should look back at a few things fondly. The things that we’ll no doubt be cringing or daydreaming about in 5 - 10 years down the track as we sit with friends to have a giggle about the old days. Here’s some of the highlights from 2007 that stuck out in my mind…

- Kate Moss for Topshop and SJP for Bitten, etc
We couldn’t get enough of celebrity designed fashion lines this year. From Kate Moss for Topshop, to Sarah Jessica Parker/Amanda Bynes/Venus Williams for Bitten and even Ashley Judd for Goody’s, it was a year where everyone wanted to get what they thought everyone should be wearing out there. Even Madonna and Kylie Minogue got in on the fun for H&M with Penelope and Monica Cruz doing their bit for Mango. If 2006 was the year of designer diffusions lines, 2007 was one for celebrity clothing lines. Perhaps next year, we’ll see more environmentally friendly collaborations,

- Ray Ban Wayfarers
Sunglasses were the accessory of 2007, forget big designer IT bags, if you weren’t accompanied by your pair of Chanel’s, Dior’s or Chloe sunglasses your look just wasn’t complete. 2007 also saw the comeback of Ray Ban who turned 70 this year, and to help them celebrate, it seems it girls around town were all wearing Ray Ban Wayfarers. The likes of Kristen Dunst to Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie were wearing them, then pretty soon there were some designer inspired Wayfarers on the market. While this trend might not translate well into 2008, it was a look to remember about 2007.

- The Prada Turban
If the Ray Ban Wayfarer was the cool accessory, then the Prada silk turban was the one that people talked about trying, but never quite got there. That is of course until Ashley Olsen wore a Prada silk head band with turban-esque knot, then we all thought we could do it. Word is that one luxury fashion magazine editor was sent one complimentary of Prada and spent the next few minutes laughing and calling the gift a little… well out there to put it nicely.

Chanel spring 2008 staring Claudia Schiffer

Claudia Schiffer seems to be the model of the season in the eyes of Karl Lagerfeld, with the Kaiser choosing his fellow German as the face of the Chanel spring summer 2008 advertising campaign.

While the beach setting is perfect for spring and summer, is the the black and white tweed suit suitable beachwear? Wouldn’t Claudia look more at home on the beach in one of the Chanel demin bikini’s as seen on the runway as modeled by Gemma Ward?

Stella McCartney is Peta’s Person of 2007

Devote vegan, Stella McCartney has been named PETA’s Person of the Year for 2007.

“Stella McCartney proves you can have a look that kills without killing,” said Peta’s US senior vice-president Dan Mathews.

Known for her refusal of using fur or leather in her collections, McCartney has been a big supporter of PETA’s work. This she narrated a video exposing allegedly cruel practices in fur farms, as well as launching a anti-fur campaign on Second Life, and challenged British Airwards to end the use of leather seats.

“I consider sitting on a poor cow’s skin a throwback to earlier, harder times - not a luxury,” she said.

With her fragrance and body care range also animal friendly, it’s a wonder she’s not PETA’s person of the year for more years to come.

Giorgio Armani pops into Armani Exchange

I’ve often wondered what I would do if I were to see a fashion designer like Giorgio Armani in real life (I considered tracking him down when he was in Sydney earlier this month) - but what would I say and do? Probably pull out my camera or my mobile phone.

But the shoppers in at the Armani Exchange store in SoHo, New York were not so nonchalant. “Everyone rushed him and started asking for autographs,” a source told Page Six. “It was mayhem.”

Good to see Giorgio keeping in touch with his more mainstream clientèle.

The Fendi Baguette morphing into the Chanel 2.55 bag for spring?

The check list

  1. Shape? Similar
  2. The Fendi Baguette circa spring 2008 features the Fendi monogram (Chanel has its iconic quilted leather).
  3. The Fendi Baguette featured the Fendi logo as the clasp of the bag (the Chanel 2.55 bag features the Chanel logo).
  4. Creative director? Karl Lagerfeld on both counts
  5. Re designing the bag in bold youthful colours and materials to attract a younger market? Check

Needless to say I’m a little skeptical judging by these images, likewise of the Fendi spring summer 2008 advertising campaign.

It stars Raquel Zimmermann, who’s laden with as many Fendi accessories as the stylist could get their hands on. The simple white colours off set by the model and what she’s wearing is everything we’ve come to expect from Karl Lagerfeld’s photography.

What do you think?

Prada spring 2008 - staring Sasha Pivovarova

To me, Sasha Privovarova has such a sharp and almost ‘do-what-I-tell-you-and-no-one-gets hurt’ look when seen in editorials and advertising campaigns it’s almost scary.

And you get three of those looks in Prada’s spring summer 2008 advertising campaign, paired with dark eye make up that makes her eyes look like they have been especially hollowed out for this shoot. But it matches the mood for Prada’s spring summer 2008 collection.

Love the colours, love Steven Meisel, but I’m quite liking the little bags.

Marc Jacobs and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Artist on Artist interview

Artist on Artist: Jennifer Jason Leigh and Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs first introduced himself to Jennifer Jason Leigh a few years ago at a hotel in New York, now years later the pair were asked to interview each other in New York for MySpace’s Artist on Artist video series.

They talk about the time when regular Jacobs photographer Juergen Teller suggested that they ask Leigh to front Jacobs’ fall winter 2006 advertising campaign, Leigh’s latest movie ‘Margot At The Wedding’ which was written and directed by her husband, Noah Baumbach, co-staring Nicole Kidman.

While the interview is nothing ground breaking, it’s an interesting insight into the lives of Jacobs and Leigh.

Lagerfeld’s reign at Chanel turns 25 in 2008

Karl Lagerfeld started working at Chanel back in 1983, a quarter of a century later he is still there and still creating new and fabulous items at Chanel.

We all love his work now, but that wasn’t always the way.

“They said, ‘Oh, [Coco] Chanel would be shocked to death!’ But they didn’t want the homage - the respectful shit - either,” he told The New Yorker earlier this year. “So to survive you have to cut the roots to make new roots. Because fashion is about today. You can take an idea from the past, but, if you do it the way it was, no one wants it.’”
