Selfridges’ Wonder Room

The weather in Sydney, Australia is beautiful at the moment, but that doesn’t stop me from wishing I were in London to check out Selfridges’ Wonder Room. Why? It’s a 19,000 square-foot space dedicated to luxury items. Besides just divine accessories, there is amazing jewellery, watches, wine, and other expensive trinkets for people who already have everything money can buy.

Like what exactly?

Like a Ostrich Departure Bag (£10,150) made of Ostrich and Swarovski Crystals which is exclusive to Selfridges, and a Hermes hand-crafted winged saddle inspired by their celestial namesake, crafted from some of the World’s finest skins. It would be like walking through a fashion museum, or Nan Kempner’s wardrobe.

Prada’s spring summer 2008 heels

Prada’s Fall 2007/08 Sfumata Pump’s (pictured right) were different but still wearable.

But would you wear Prada’s spring summer 2008’s heels that were recently worn down the catwalk? The eclectic mix of colours, swirls and the addition of patterned tights makes the open toed shoes look… well a bit odd. And the heel? I have no words. It’s art right?

Christina Aguilera’s perfume: Sometimes it’s all you need to wear

Christina Aguilera’s first fragrance offering together with Procter & Gamble Prestige Products is about to be released soon. Known for her sexy dancing, the mum-to-be is wearing nothing in the print and television advertising for her new fragrance.

The print ad features Christina wearing nothing but lace like tattoo detail on her lower back to match the detail on the perfume bottle. The sepia coloured ad harks back to old Hollywood, with the blonde curls and red lips.

Watch the behind the scenes of the commercial below… It features Christina stripping off her robe, revealing bare skin and her Christian Louboutin heels on.

After all, with the Christina Aguilera fragrance “sometimes it’s all you need to wear”.

Milan FW S/S 2008: Gucci

I love how Frida Giannini has taken Gucci back to the 1950s, where the vision was monochromatic with splashes of golden yellow and bubblegum pink. The skirts were full, the jackets were fitted and tough, but everything was cinched in at the waist. Taking inspiration from American artists like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, the spring summer 2008 Gucci collection took my breath away.

Prints were bold and carefully placed to emphasize the beauty in the female form, whether to emphasize the waist with a black patent leather belt, swirls and stripes to create the desired effect. Checks and plaids took over when the rougher looks came on the runway in the form of tough fitted jackets, skinny pants and loose tops. The taffeta evening gowns were sweeping and cinched at the waist with beautiful floral prints splashed across them. Such a fun and beautiful collection. Oh Gucci, how I dream of thee.

Milan FW S/S 2008: Burberry Prorsum

Burberry Prorsum’s spring summer 2008 collection was channeling the rock chick vibe. So who better to kick off the show than mancunian model of the moment, Agyness Deyn. “She’s a luxury warrior. It’s a bit more rock,” Burberry’s Christopher Bailey said of the show’s inspiration. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Deep Purple and Iron Maiden.”

Combining Burberry’s signature trench coats cinched at the waist with studded belts, layered with form fitting pencil skirts, dresses and shirts, the coloured evolved from bold metallic colours to bright turquoise and pink. Pieces were embellished with studs and medallions, with strong body con silhouettes. The show finished with a handful off ruched chiffon and fluffy cocktail dresses and skirts giving the collection a little texture beyond the hard and fierce look. Looks like Burberry is going sexy for spring.

News bites: Gianfranco Ferre’s replacement, Luella boutique robbed, Armani phone

It’s good to see Lars Nilsson will be back designing for a major fashion house… but on the other end of the scale, designer boutique’s can be a magnet for thieves as Luella discovers, but now you can call them police thanks to Armani and Samsung:

  • Gianfranco Ferre’s replacement has been named and its former Bill Blass and Nina Ricci designer, Lars Nilsson. Ferre passed away this past June, and while his design team did a great job finishing off the fashion house’s spring 2008 show, it’s good to see they waited until after the show to make the announcement. “I’m thrilled and honored to be joining Gianfranco Ferré, a house with a powerful legacy. I feel very inspired by Mr. Ferré’s imprint on fashion and strong architectural sensibility. I look forward to working with the Gianfranco Ferré house to take it to the next level and help cement its standing as an esteemed and globally-recognized luxury company,” says Nilsson. He will be in charge of 4 collections a year, two menswear and two womenswear.
  • Luella Bartley’s first London Luella boutique has been robbed just days after it opened with a glittering party during London Fashion Week. Moped riding thieves cleaned out about US$20,000 worth of handbags and shelf stock. This comes Brora’s cashmere store was robbed just 10 minutes earlier.
  • Giorgio Armani’s first gadget in a collaboration with Samsung has been unveiled. It’s a phone, a LCD TV, a camera, music player… the whole nine yards. All for the size of a credit card (only fatter) and it comes with it’s own Armani textured leather case. Oh and it will retail for 650 euros, which is pretty much inline with the LG/Prada phone.

Where in the world are the supermodels this season?

That seems to be the questions on everyone’s lips. Fashion forums and blogs are buzzing with that time honoured question - ok it’s probably a 2 year old tradition - where are the supermodels on the catwalk? Gone are the days where the likes of Gisele Bundchen walks the catwalk more than 20 times a runway season, with the likes of runway favourites Gemma Ward and Daria Werbowy gracing page after page of fashion advertising rather than spending an entire month of grueling work with little or no sleep dashing from New York, to London, to Milan, then Paris.

According to Style.com’s Style File, we may just see Daria on the runway at Chanel next week in Paris, while Gemma has been spotted at New York Fashion Week parties. While News.com.au’s Fully Chic reports that Gemma is in Milan for castings, but model of the moment Agyness Deyn has appeared on New York, London and Milan runways.

But will she be on the runway next season after she lands a few more advertising and editorial campaigns?

Mischa Barton fronts Iceberg’s fall 2008 ad campaign

Iceberg’s fall 2007/8 advertising campaign features former The O.C. actress and Ked’s face, Mishca Barton (and male model Nicolas Bemberg). Photographed late April in Paris by Norwegian photographer Solve Sundsbo, the series of campaign images mostly posed in or around a vintage car.

Can anyone remind me what Mischa actually does for a day job - besides posing for photos and being followed around by the paparazzi?
