RAFW SS08 - Melanie Cutfield

The Melanie Cutfield spring summer 2008 collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week was romantic. There, I said it in one word. Now can I go get some dinner and go to bed? It’s almost midnight.

Ok that’s an awful thing to say. Melanie’s collection was romantic, where the bottoms were draped, pleated or tucked into place. There was emphasis put on the shoulders, with definition added with ruffles or some more stiff definition with boxy almost sporty shapes.

To finish off the collection, which was done entirely in muted colours like grey, dusty pink and navy, was was wardrobe essential knits that will keep you in good stead for years to come.

Now what I didn’t understand, was why on earth was there tribal music playing when there were beautiful draped gowns parading down the catwalk?

RAFW SS08 - Anna Thomas

I’ve been a fan of Anna Thomas since I happened to be working backstage at one of her winter collection shows in Melbourne. Known for her crisp tailoring Anna’s Rosemont Australian Fashion Week spring summer 2008 collection was like a fresh spring day where the buds are blooming and bird are singing. It reminded me of a summer garden party complete with a jug of Pimms and little finger sandwiches without their crusts.

Utterly wearable, the Anna Thomas spring summer 2008 collection featured crisp pieces in white, navy, bright green with hints of orange and a few bold prints. Anna stuck to her tailoring roots by showing pieces that were boxy, pinched in the waist, or pleated so that the material flowed. What did I love most? The bright green coloured pieces, and the polka dot bow ties that were left untied and sitting on the lapels.

This show was reminiscent of what brought Luella Bartley to the forefront of British fashion design at the turn of the century. Anna’s modern and sophisticated interpretation of today’s popular trends was just darling to watch.

Did we mention that the cute waiters wore them while handing us all a glass of champagne? Yellowglen’s new Jewel bubbly that has 30% less calories and 40% less alcohol to be exact.

Check out the video thanks to YouTube, Fashion TV and New Woman magazine after the fold. There is a great explanation of how the cute pony tails were put together.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten collection revealed in Glamour

Ok so half the web’s fashion addicts have seen the photos of Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten collection for Steve & Barry’s. But Glamour have the first “official” look at the line in their June edition with Sarah Jessica Parker modeling it in a fashion spread.

In the interview with Glamour, she reveals that her clothes “are not setting a trend. We’re not Balenciaga. They’re well-made clothes that feel of-the-moment.”

And that she didn’t name the brand after herself because “I was embarrassed to. I don’t want the line to be about me. I’m not pretending that these are clothes from my closet. Or that this is Carrie Bradshaw.”

The Glamour photoshoot doesn’t include just Bitten clothes, she’s photographed above wearing a Chanel jacket, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Bitten Sarah Jessica Parker t-shirt and jeans.

The magazine hits newsstands May 8 but you can get a sneak peek at the story and photos of the shoot at Glamour.com. The collection will be hitting Steve & Barry stores in the US on June 7.

Boy aren’t those cuffed jeans reminiscent of the ones she modeled for Gap just a few years ago…

Nicole Richie and Dita von Teese arrive in Australia

One is in town for the Australian MTV Video Awards, and the other is here for Australian Fashion Week.

Well, you may be a little surprised, but Nicole Richie is actually in town for MTV Australia, and she didn’t make any new fans on her arrival at Sydney Airport. According to the SMH, she left her fans in tears as she dashed from airport to car.

Fan Bianca Valodian woke up at 4am to catch a glimpse of Richie and was devastated to miss out on getting an autograph from the tiny star.

“We haven’t slept in two days,” the 17-year-old year 12 student from Frenchs Forest said. “It’s pretty heartbreaking.”

Qantas staff were also underwhelmed by Richie, who was rude to the cabin crew on her flight from Los Angeles. “She’s not very nice,” a female crew member said. “She has no charm.” By contrast, her fiance Joel Madden and his brother, Benji, of Good Charlotte, happily posed for photographs with fans and signed autographs at Sydney Airport after flying in from Auckland after Richie.

Gemma Ward uses Nicole Kidman’s acting coach

Talk about starting out with the best in Hollywood.

Australia Supermodel, Gemma Ward, had the benefit of Nicole Kidman’s acting coach on the set of The Strangers, the movie which also stars Live Tyler and Scott Speedman.

Fashionista.com ran into Live Tyler at a benefit last week and it seems Liv had nothing but great things to say about Gemma. Here’s a few things Liv had to say about Gemma…

- Liv, what was it like working with Gemma Ward?
Oh Gemma? She’s great! When she came to the set, she was working with Nicole Kidman’s acting coach - not just for Nicole, actually; her coach works with a lot of great actors. And Gemma just came on and did a really great job when the cameras were on. You could see she worked really hard for it.

- Was it fun having another really tall girl on the set?
Sure, and she’s beautiful…

- Yeah, we know. It’s distracting. But we can’t wait for the film.
The film is going to be great, and the thing with Gemma is, she was so professional. She’s fantastic.

No word on when the movie will be released – and as for a movie poster? Well stay tuned to the Rogue Pictures website.

Josh Goot for Target Australia to follow Stella McCartney mania

UPDATED - the news has been confirmed, read more here.

There have been rumblings around the traps that Target Australia were about to announce a new designer for their Designers for Target collection. And if the SMH’s Fashion Season blog is correct, the next collaborator will be Josh Goot.

Target is the principle sponsor of Goot’s Spring Fashion Week show on Thursday May 3 at 9.00am - and its logo appears on the invitation. But although neither the Target or Goot camps were spilling any other beans this afternoon, Fashion Season has learned that a Josh Goot/Target collaboration is due be either announced or else unveiled at Target in mid May.

A Target spokeswoman declined to confirm or deny whether Goot was the only Australian fashion brand involved with this latest Designers For Target project.

“I can’t tell you anything other than Target are supporting me on this show” Goot told Fashion Season. “It’s great to have their support - I think they’ve shown a commitment to young Australian designers over the past year”.

Well this news could be intriguing, after all Goot has come a long way from his first debut back in 2004, and went on to show at New York Fashion Week last year.
