LMFF Day 1 - It’s a mod, mod, mod, mod world

Was I in Carnaby St in the swinging 60’s? Oh no, just the opening runway show at L’oreal’s Melbourne Fashion Festival.

You could forgive me for mistaking the time and place though, the parade music was provided by The Beatles; ‘She Loves You’ being the opening song. With Toni Maticevski’s collection coming out to the rarefied strains of ‘Eleanor Rigby’.

The mod theme seemed to run quite rampant through the group show, with all the designers, Marnie Skillings, Camilla and Marc, Kirrily Johnston, and Alice McCall, seemingly inspired by the trend this winter. Looks like we’re suppose to be wearing tunics and tights predominantly in shades of grey and black, with occasional splashes of colour to break it up this winter. With wool, silks and and bauble-buttoned overcoats being key feature’s of the season.

What was quite interesting to note was that Tina Kalivas brought out her models in red conical headpieces, reminiscent of Courreges or more aptly, Biba.

    You know what they say-

And don’t throw the past away
You might need it some rainy day
    Dreams can come true again
When ev’ry thing old is new again!

I LOVED Alice McCall’s showing yesterday - it’s great that she managed to keep her signature look, while kind of making it more ‘grown-up’ than past seasons. It’s so wearable!
