“Get Chucked” with Converse Chuck Taylors

These Converse Chuck Taylor ads are a little odd, what exactly are they trying to say to us with their “Get Chucked” slogan?

The first ad (pictured above left) has a male model about to use the outdoor toilet, which is incidentally being used as a flower bed. The second (pictured above right) shows a male and female model on a picnic table holding a bottle of water.

What do you think it means?

Daria Werbowy talks Proenza Schouler for Lancome

The Proenza Schouler Pink lipstick by Lancome is now sold out, but there is still the Proenza Schouler for Lancome dress to look forward too.

The dress Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez created for Lancome was inspired by the Hypnôse bottle. A preview behind the scenes look of the purple chiffon gown is now available on YouTube. It was rather interesting to watch Jack and Lazaro gush about Daria, and vice versa. The shoot seemed like one big love in.

Keep an eye on www.hypnosecouture.com from April 1 for a dedicated site features a one-stop shop for those wanting to bid on the couture dress. All the proceeds from the Hypnôse Dress will go towards Save the Children.

Luxe to less: Red shoes

All Dorothy from a Wizard of Oz had to do was click her sparkly red shoes as she wished to go home. I’m not sure the same thing will apply to these shoes, but I’m sure you can give it a go with these fire engine red patent leather heels.First up and the most luxe is a pair of shoes I have been lusting after for years now, the Glare Shoe by Beatrix Ong. The round-toe and Mary-Jane style strap is just too adorable to pass up. They’re approximately $411.60 from My-Wardrobe.com. A little cheaper than the Glare shoes, is the Lotus Leather Peep Toe Patent Mary Jane Shoe from ASOS and have been marked down to approximately $145.86. The heel is thicker than the Glare’s and would look fantastic with a pair of dark jeans.

Next up is a classic round-toe pump, these platform heels from Victoria’s Secret will brighten up your day for only $60. Then get taller for less with these Mossimo Slingbacks in paprika for only $24.99 - these are great if you’re not sure if patent leather, especially in red, is your thing. You don’t have to fork out much so if you don’t like them next season, the price won’t dent the bank balance much.

Got a luxe item you want me to do a Luxe for Less on? Leave a comment!

Irina Lazareanu to model Kate Moss for Topshop

Imagine being picked out of the thousands of models by a fellow model. A supermodel called Kate Moss. Well according to Vogue.co.uk, Kate Moss has picked model Irina Lazareanu (pictured above right on the catwalk and on the cover of W Jewelry) to model her Topshop collection.

It’s not the first time the two models’ paths have crosses, Irina is a former drummer in Babyshambles, you know, Pete Doherty’s band, and when Kate was guest-editing French Vogue in 2005 she cast Irina in an editorial shoot.

“Kate thinks she’s got a very unique, rock-chick look,” says a Vogue.co.uk source. “She really felt that Irina embodies the feel of her TopShop range - her porcelain skin, her big eyes under her thick Sixties fringe - it was a look Kate was impressed with.”

P.S. Kate Moss for Topshop will be available in New York thanks to Barneys from May 8 – only 7 days after the range launches in the UK.

3 Questions with: Marianne at Melbourne Runway

Featuring some of SASSYBELLA.com’s favourite bloggers / blogs on the web.

Last week we asked three questions to Andy at Denimology, this week we have a chat to Marianne at Melbourne Runway.

- What was your inspiration for Melbourne Runway?
I lived in Europe for about a year and I became somewhat nostalgic for Melbourne’s sense of style. I had seen other Australian street style photos but I found that they always seemed to capture the more overt and extravagant/kooky side of fashion. With Melbourne Runway, I wanted to capture the ‘quiet’ moments of fashion brilliance.

- What is your favourite thing about Melbourne fashion?
I really admire the youth in Melbourne. I’m often astounded at their level of finesse and their considered approach to fashion. I love that in Melbourne you really have the liberty to wear whatever you want, even though many people do play it safe. I think there’s room for more indulgence! Also, I love that we can really get down and dirty with ‘winter’ wear.

- What is your favourite trend of the upcoming season?
For A/W 2007, it’s all about beautiful jackets. My pick is a Balenciaga inspired peaked/rounded blazer. I’ll also continue Spring/Summer’s trend with the shorter hemline with sweaters, cardi’s and shirt tunics (as dresses) with leggings. A trend that I’d love to adopt more of is the play with fabrications… neoprene, coated materials etc. have this delicious liquid appeal.

Check out Melbourne Runway now!

Let us know who you want to be featured next and what you want us to ask them!

P.S. Marianne also has a radio program, also called Melbourne Runway, and she’s done a Q&A with me! So if you’re in Melbourne listen in on SYN 90.7 or it is streamed online at www.syn.org.au.

Bloggers a little to fast for Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten

We’ve all read about how fast news can be reported on online thanks to the internet age, and it seems it was definitely a little too fast for Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten collection for Steve & Barry’s.

According to the WWD.com:

Fashion blog Fashionista, published photographs from a password-protected area of a preliminary Bitten web site intended only for long-lead-time monthly magazines. When attorneys from Steve & Barry’s requested Fashionista remove the photos, it did, but by then dozens of other blogs had already posted images, giving plenty of potential customers the chance to put in their two cents.

“I always thought SJP had great personal style, now I see she had a great personal stylist! They look a lot like those clothes she modeled for those Gap ads she did a while back, especially those cuffed jeans!” said one commentator on Fashionista.

Oops. Apparently Fashionista received an anonymous email from someone who claimed to work with the Bitten team which said that Stev & Barry were trying to redesign the pieces before June 7 (the Bitten launch date). “The e-mailer speculated the change-up had perhaps been prompted by the online storm of criticism,” says the WWD.com.

This is interesting. Goes to shows blogs and the online medium can have a huge effect on what goes on in the (fashion) world, as well as being a fantastic place for people to gather opinions on brands and products.

For more on the whole Sarah Jessica Parker/Bitten and Steve & Barry’s saga, read it at WWD.com.

Did you see the Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker for Steve & Barry photos? I’m sure they’re still online somewhere. I suppose at the end of the at day at least it’s affordable, even if it’s isn’t fashionably ground breaking.

Comme des Garcon & Speedo for Topshop

When you mention Speedo’s in Australia, most people tend to think of the ‘budgie smugglers‘ (also known as the men’s brief style swimmers). The iconic Australian swim wear brand have collaborated with Comme des Garcons (a Japanese brand with a French name) to create a swim wear collection for Topshop.

Is there anyone left who hasn’t collaborated with Topshop or any high street chain store recently? Next time you’ll hear is that Marc Jacobs is doing a collaboration soon too.

Anyway, back to the Comme des Garcons and Speedo collaboration - after all the World Swimming Championships are on in Melbourne at the moment - all the suits still hold the classic Speedo shape, but quirky Comme des Garcon patterns. Each piece is £50 and are available now at Topshop. You had better get in quick if you want some stylish swim wear to do laps in.

A 15 year old Vogue cover girl is bound to get people talking

The April issue of Australian Vogue has been on newsstands for almost 3 weeks, and it seems Vogue can not seem to do anything right at the moment.

First Media Watch pointed out last week that Vogue’s ‘interview’ with Elizabeth Taylor may not have been as exclusive as they claimed. Now a Sydney newspaper, The Sunday Telegraph, have reported that the 15 year old model on the cover of the April 2007 issue have been slammed by Family Council of Victoria secretary, Bill Muehlenberg.

“We have to ask, at what point should we be putting children into adult fashion magazines?” Mr Muehlenberg said.

Katie Braatvedt is the first New Zealand model to be featured on the cover of Australian Vogue in 10 years and features in an impressive 13-page editorial spread in Vogue.

Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements said she took the model’s age into account when deciding to feature her on the cover.

“It’s not sexy or decadent. They’re whimsical, romantic portraits, and I see an incredible, ethereal prettiness in this girl.”

We’re just asking…

Have you been keeping up with your fashion gossip this week? If you have, can you answer the following questions?

  1. H&M are known for their designer partnerships, but their latest collaboration with Madonna didn’t sell quite so quickly. There was no stampede like the Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf collections, even though one high profile designer said he’d be in the queue in Paris. Who was the designer?
  2. Who’s the former New Zealand ’supermodel’ who recently joined the long line of model turn designers by launching her swimwear collection in Sydney this week? (Hint: she was in the last season of America’s Dancing with the Stars.)
  3. Speaking of supermodels, who was the English supermodel who treated her walk to and from the community service centre like walks down the catwalk. She was snapped wearing a Dolce & Gabbana sequined dress and Christian Louboutin boots as she arrived and left her community service centres?
