Tom Ford launches Black Orchid with bling and luggage on the horizon

There’s another Tom Ford line to add to our growing wish lists. The Daily reports that Tom Ford is currently developing a collection of luggage and jewelry. The high-end collections are set to debut after his flagship boutique opens in April 2007 on Madison Avenue.

This news follows hot on the heels of the launch of Black Orchid at Saks Fifth Avenue on Thursday night. Ford graced the floors of the department store globally launch his first stand-alone fragrance in his Tom Ford Beauty division, a licensee of the Estée Lauder Cos.

A limited edition US$600 Lalique crystal version of Black Orchid (the 15ml frangrance is pictured above left) is available in stores, 200 plus people were lined up to get their fragrances signed by the iconic designer.

With the fragrance on sale since Sunday (the 100ml fragrance retails at $160, pictured above right), it has industry insiders whispering that Black Orchid was well on its way to be the highest grossing fragrance in its first week in the history of Saks, or over $100,000 in it’s launch week.

If that’s the case then it should easily over take the current record holder at Saks’, Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb, which The Daily reports it to have generated $65,000 in its first week of sales.

Julia Roitfeld Restoin, the face of the Black Orchid campaign, even managed to swing by the launch for a brief photo opportunity, along with the likes of Zac Posen, Margherita Missoni, Donatella Versace, Jennifer Lopez, and Carmen Cass.

“It’s so wonderful to see this come to fruition,” said Ford, surveying the 200-plus people jamming around a main floor podium. “I’ve been working so hard for the last year and a half, and people haven’t seen all the things I’m working on. It’s the beginning of it, and it’s nice to start to see it.”

It’s nice that Mr. Ford recently launched his fragrance, Black
Orchid, but there’s a little problem.

Black Orchid, as a trademark, is owned by Lander Co. Inc.

The Trademark Office has recently informed Mr. Ford that his “Registration of the proposed mark is refused because
of a likelihood of confusion with the mark in U.S.
Registration No. 1089523.’ Lander registered the mark, Black Orchid, on April 18, 1978.

So now the question is: how much will Estee Lauder have to pay Lander for use of the trademark.

Estee Lauder was in the same situation with Diddy’s Unforgivable. A French company had already registered Unforgiven. In that case, they worked out an undisclosed deal.

    Business before pleasure, Mr. Ford…
