Chick Lit – Bitter is the new black

Well I think the title says it all… Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office.

Really. This funny novel by Jen Lancaster does actually live up to it’s witty sub title.

I found the book refreshing and real, though sometimes I wanted to reach in the book and slap Jen for being such a smart ass. The book takes you on a rather unpredictable journey where you follow Jen around her high paying finance job, to being jobless post 9/11 (and of course going into the unemployment office carrying a Prada bag). As hard as she tries she can’t get a job, so she gets married, then her husband loses his job. Things don’t look up when they have to move out of their swish apartment. And of course Jen gets kicked while she’s down, so much so you almost feel sorry for her as the character starts to warm to you.

And like most chick lit stories, there is a happy ending (because what good novel would end on a horrible note?).

A fun novel, that towards the end starts talking about her ups and downs in the world of web logs. Or as we now know them – Blogs. And boy can I relate to some of her comments – especially the ones about blogging and mundane things you have to do in the work place…

Definitely pick up this book for a fun light read.

Now that I’ve finished reading this book… it’s on to The Debutante Divorcee by Plum Sykes. Or one of the zillion mags I’ve got piled up next to my bed!
