Balenciaga Motorcycle Le Dix Bag

Kate Moss Sienna Miller What is that bag that style queen’s Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are carrying? That would be the Balenciaga Motorcycle Le Dix Bag. It has also been spotted on the arm of stylish girls like Ashley Olsen and Kelly Osbourne. They are the rock chick’s IT bag, ideal for the girl who might just jump on a motorcycle and leave the all boys in her dust.

The bag was launched in 2001 with the 3 commonly known names – Le Dix, Lariat and Motorcycle bag – it is most likely that its name is officially called Le Dix (French for the number ten) as it is a fetish number for the brand (the house of Balenciaga also has a fragrance called the Le Dix).

What I love about the bag with it’s multiple zips, studs and stitched handle is the sheer variety of sizes and it’s versatility. But it’s best feature is that the Italian distressed leather gets better with age, so you can use it everyday and will look great for years to come.

It has been pictured on the arms of stylish celebrities everywhere, from Mary-Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Kelly Osbourne, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Richie, Cameron Diaz, Nicky Hilton, Demi Moore, Kirsten Dunst, Anna Kournikova, Christy Turlington, Lindsay Lohan, Gwyneth Paltrow and of course Sienna and Kate.

Available in every colour from hot metallic pink to red, black and white, the size range is also astounding with small clutch and purse versions to giant travel sized bags.

So when did this trend kick off?

The Balenciaga Motorcycle bag was introduced in Spring 2001, designed by the very talented Nicolas Ghesquiere. While us regular people weren’t seen carrying it for a few more months (the price tag isn’t one that screams affordable). In a copy of Vogue dating back to 2002 about 3 – 4 European Vogue editors carrying it around from fashion show to after party!

When will it end?

It’s been hot since Spring 2001 as was revived thanks to the current Boho Chic trend, Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. As a bonus it doesn’t scream ‘look at me I’m a designer bag’ so if you don’t like the logo covered bags this one for you. I like it because it has a bit of an edge and is a little less structured. Will it be a classic? The jury is still out on that one.

The Le Dix was later re-released with bigger and bolder studs creating another rush of orders, especially since Nicole Richie was photographed throughout her pregnancy with on covering her baby bump with the bag, much like Grace Kelly and her Hermes Kelly bag.
