Elizabeth Hurley’s Versace safety pin dress – one of Harrods top LBDs

It is probably one of the most famous little black dresses; arguably coming in second behind the LBD Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tifanny’s. Thanks to Versace and their little black dress that was held together by carefully placed large gold safety pins, Elizabeth Hurley’s star never shone so brightly than when she walked the red carpet with Hugh Grant at the 1994 premier of Four Weddings and a Funeral in London.

As part of an exhibition that Harrods unveiled this week, you can buy the Versace safety pin LBD made to order for £10,690 as part of their tribute to the Little Black Dress.

But hang on a second… the promotional image (above left) that came with the release showed models posing around a mannequin with the “safety pin dress”. Though it’s not quite the same dress is it? I wonder what is going on there. At least the one in the promo picture is a lot less revealing – not all of us look as toned as Ms Hurley.

If you’re in London in the next little while, it’s worth popping into the Timeless Living LBD exhibition in Harrods Knightsbridge store because the Liz Hurley safety pin LBD is not the only famous LBD on display. The simple black shift Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1963 movie Charades is also on display, along with pieces design from Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta, Vivienne Westwood, and Chloe.

Marigay McKee, Fashion and Beauty Director at Harrods says: “The Little Black Dress is not just a fashion accessory – it’s an institution and we’re delighted to be paying homage to such an iconic fashion symbol during our Timeless Luxury promotion”.
