If you follow us on Twitter, you probably noticed that I was in Detroit last month for the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) and many people emailed and tweeted to me wanting to know why I was the car capital of America (car buffs may argue that Detroit is the car capital of the world). But besides being given a “free” trip from Ford Motors, it was because Ford wanted to showcase how they design their cars – not just to the car crowd who already have a passion for a beautifully designed vehicle.

Flying out over 140 bloggers to Detroit, Michigan – or online influencers as Ford put it – from 16 countries as far reaching as Turkey, China, South Africa and Australia from various blogging disciplines like art & design, travel and fashion, Ford were set to send waves through the car marketing industry. Influence use to be a hard thing to measure with print publications, especially with the readership ‘statistic’ which uses parameters like cover image recognition to count how many people read a single magazine here in Australia. But with digital it’s different, everything is measureable.

When everyone found out that I blogged about fashion and beauty, the one question kept coming up: How I was going to cover the motor show? I have written about cars in the past, but mostly because they’ve teamed up with an amazing fashion designer or supermodel – not about how much horsepower it has. Fellow bloggers were great with suggestions – I especially liked the one where I showcased the outfits worn by the female models used by the car brands. Then I realised that unlike some of the tacky local motor shows, there wasn’t a busty girl in skimpy clothes in sight. Not that there weren’t girls in sexy dresses, but there was a level of class to it all, after all the NAIAS is for the seriously serious industry folk. I toyed with the idea of doing a day by day recap of what I did, but that would only serve to appease my own needs.

Then a thought came to me while I was starting my 25 hour journey home to Sydney; maybe fashion could learn a thing or two about the design process from the motor industry, or from Ford at least.

5 things the fashion industry could learn from Ford Motors

1. Technology is amazing

It’s not that fashion don’t utilize technology, but for Ford (and other car brands), it has become an integral part in the design process. We were shown how Ford use 3D and CG technology to design a car every step along the way – from sketching an idea to seeing how light shimmers across the surface of the vehicle, there is not one feature of a car that is not accounted for.

While I love paper sketches, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that most fashion designers don’t even draw anymore. We see the designs on Project Runway using design tablets (thanks in main part to the show’s sponsor HP) but the 3D modelling and effects used by Ford was astounding. While we would all love to see a haute couture creation, it’s just not physically possible for us all. Last year saw Valentino Garavani and his longtime business partner Giancarlo Giammetti launch a 3D digital museum at http://valentino-garavani-archives.org spanning 50 years of Valentino’s namesake brand (he retired in 2008). The online museum features nearly 100 fashion shows on video, 5,000 dresses, the original working sketches from the designer’s hand and photographs of the clothes, the celebrities who wore them and a vision of the world of Valentino.

“It is the first time there has been a virtual fashion museum — and people can interact,” says Mr. Giammetti. “To be called pioneers for what we have done — and at our age!”

2. Quality over quantity

I was pretty amazed when Ford showed us all the steps it takes to get a car from the design phase to the showroom floor. The work and the thought that goes into a single vehicle is astounding.

Some could argue that car brands launch too many cars per year, but it’s not like they’re Karl Lagerfeld churning out up to 20+ collections a year for the likes of Chanel, Fendi and his own lines. There is beauty in something that takes time to create and thought is given.

Ford has teams of people who test everything, from how seats should be placed in cars (with a lot of research into how people step in and out of their cars) to how a car drives in traffic via simulators. It would be nice if some fashion designers would focus on having a quality pieces made, not just shipping everything off to a cheap maker in Bali who gives you back wonky seams or uneven shoulders. When you’re charging a few hundred for a single tshirt.

3. Where is the eco-fashion focus?

I met several eco friendly bloggers during the three days I was in Detroit for Ford’s Fantasy Camp / NAIAS. It was kind of rare because I think I know of one writer in Australia who is fairly prominent in Australia with her writings about eco fashion and living – the lovely Tullia Jack.

Ford have teams who are working on finding sustainable and recyclable materials to build their cars with, like soy for soy-foam seats to corn based plastics and fabrics. Whether some of those materials are actually sustainable was up for debate amongst some, it was good to see a brand as big as Ford striving to deliver options for the eco-friendly conscious.

In fashion eco-fashion tends to get sucked up into the vortex that is fast fashion and we lose sight of the brands who are creating beautiful designs or making a difference with their work. Even we’re guilty of forgetting about eco-fashion, something which we are looking to change.

4. Fashion trade shows could learn a thing or two from NAIAS

I’ve been to several fashion trade shows here in Australia and they usually consist of booth with racks of clothes, looking rather uninspired. Sometimes there is a designer or two that stands out, but where is that showmanship? Each car brand at NAIAS had allotted times when they could do a spectacular unveil of their latest models and the crowds who turned out to see the new Ford 2013 Fusion was astounding. Hundreds of people from the media and car industry insiders pilled in to see the unveiling of the Ford Fusion car with even more walking around the huge convention space.

Premiere at Fashion Exposed in Australia comes close to hitting the mark with a luxurious showroom for the luxury designers, but I didn’t feel the excitement in the room when I went last year. Maybe fashion trade shows are different overseas – I’m dying to hit the Pitti Immagine Uomo trade show in Florence or MAGIC in Las Vegas one day – but in Australia they could do with a revamp.

5. Bring people together – much like Luisaviaroma’s FirenzeForever

This point is a little self-indulgent… because I love meeting bloggers. Conversations never just stay in your own industries and you make friends with so many different people who share some of the geekier/girlie qualities people don’t always appreciate. I’m not saying fly bloggers to a location together like Ford did with their Fantasy Camp, or LuisaViaRoma do twice-yearly with their Firenze Forever styling lab, which I had the pleasure of attending last year. But if you can show a blogger a good time at a fun event, then the chances of getting coverage is exponentially higher.

After meeting so many bloggers on the Ford Fantasy Camp and listening them speak at Ford’s Ignite evening I grew more inspired to work on SASSYBELLA.com more, and even have plans to tweak the design a little. Even though everyone is at different stages of their blogging careers – some work on their blogs full time, some blog part time, while others write for bigger digital properties – it was fascinating to hear about the in’s and out’s of blogging in their respective countries and get an insight into their worlds.

Back to the Social Media aspect of the Ford Fantasy Camp…

The question on every digital marketers lips is probably “was it worth it?” Clearly that is a question not for me to answer, but Ford’s head of Social Media, Scott Monty gave us a quick list of stats from Ford’s perspective after the first day of NAIAS. Thanks to the social media power of all the attendees, Ford had:

2,200 twitter mentions

Reached 5 million people

40% coverage was about Ford today from the NAIAS

Share of voice for their new car, the Ford Fusion (aka the Mondeo in Australia) is normally 9.5%. Today it was 58.5%.

70% of all the coverage from NAIAS during press conference was about Ford and the Ford Fusion

Before I end this, let me just give a big shout out to some of the cool people I met that made my time in Detroit a fun and memorable experience: Nikki, Dylan, Alix, Kai and Stuart.

Hope I see you all again soon – preferably in Australia!

Sometimes being a blogger leads us down some interesting paths. And this one time, thanks to Pantene’s new Aqua Light range, we were lead into a video studio and asked to “swish” our hair just like Cat Deeley did in their British television commercials (and all those other Pantene commercials we’ve grown up watching).

After having our hair washed with Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light shampoo & conditioner, then blow dried by the talented team at Barney Martin Hairdressing, we were lead into a film studio where HD cameras were set up for us to film our own personal Pantene commercials. For several girls it was a dream come true, we all remembered the annual competitions Pantene use to run to a ‘hair & face’.

We were split into pairs and Iantha from Bless This Mess and I couldn’t stop laughing (mostly with nerves I suspect) as we swung our heads from left to right, top to bottom and horizontal. And the finished result? Here it is.

Next time, someone remind me not to pull funny faces and to put a little more cover up on my blemishes. HD video cameras are not forgiving.

Since we’re all for the funny faces and sharing the love, here’s some more videos from some fellow beauty bloggers:

Iantha from Bless This Mess

Polly Mae Hard Pretty Things

Kimberly from The Plastic Diaries

What is Pantene Pro-VAqua Light?

A new product line by everyone’s favourite love-to-hate brand, Pantene. This new range says it has zero residues and zero weight, leaving you with nourished hair while the formula hydrates the hair and leaves it fresh without feeling weighed down or looking flat. And it’s free from silicones. Admittedly I’m sceptical of “revolutionary” (my word, not theirs) new products, but after the first use my hair felt light and airy (and I have a lot of this straight hair) and there was notably less build up. If you don’t believe us we can give you a peek inside our shower.

Priced from $4.89 a bottle and available from your local supermarket, I definitely think you should pick up a bottle to try for yourself.

As the rainy days come and go as quickly as one of my best friends changes her nail colour, we have a shoe pick for you. Even if you’re a fan of the high heel, you can’t go past the DKNY Voyager Rain Boot for those annoying showers that the weatherman did not predict. Made to “roll, drop and go: these versatile gumboots / wellingtons are foldable, packable and lightweight so that you pull them out and slip them on… then take them off, roll them back up and put them back into their nylon mini “to go” bag and slip back into your heels when the rain stops.

Like the pair of high heels and umbrella we keep in our desk drawers for those last minute meetings or showers, we think this would be an ideal addition when the unpredictable weather rolls in, better than those heavy clunky gumboots you can’t take anywhere unless you want to carry a big bag to hold them afterwards. The DKNY Voyager Rain Boot retails at $85 from DKNY.com.

SASSYBELLA.com

I was first introduced to Lush Cosmetics through their pungent stores and a love of bath bombs when I was younger (soaking my feet after a day of shopping was my idea of a perfect day when I was in my mid-teens). Since then I have become an advocate of their Ocean Salt face scrub and their Dream Cream, so I was really excited when an apron with my name embroidered on it arrived in the mail, along with an invitation to attend a master class to learn more about the brand I have been a fan of for years.

So two weeks ago I went to a fun media event held by Lush to emphasise their skincare is made from natural ingredients. Lush’s national product trainer Amy Reynolds gave us an introduction to the brand, that Lush is more than just bath bombs and soaps, instead focus on creating good skincare products that work from fresh ingredients. And then we were sent to our little mini kitchen stations – just to prove that if the Lush staff can make their face masks by hand with natural ingredients, so can we!

Our task of the day was to make our own Sacred Truth face mask from fantastic fresh ingredients like linseeds, yoghurt, honey, papaya, wheat grass and so much more. It seemed like a slightly daunting task but Amy gave us simple instructions and explained why each ingredient is used as we dutifully poured, sliced, cracked and whipped all our ingredients into our mixing bowl. For the record, honey and yoghurt are use because they are extremely softening and moisturising, helping skin retain moisture, while ingredients like gingseng, wheat germ and green tea are rich in antioxidants to help relieve the skin after a tough day outside in the elements.

Amy explained that this is exactly what they do in the Lush factories around the world – in Australia, UK, Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, Croatia and Japan – only in much bigger quantities (and there for with much bigger mixers). The whole process took about 30 minutes, and then we got to put our face masks in little tubs to take home.

Like all fresh ingredients, we have to refrigerate the Sacred Truth fresh face mask and since it doesn’t contain synthetic preservatives, it has a two week used by date. That night my friend and I put some of the mask on as we caught up over wine, just to test out my face mask-making skills.

After we washed the mask off, it felt just like we were told it would – refreshed and clean with soft skin. The formula also has anti-ageing properties and helps reduce redness in skin, so this would be a perfect mask for summer after a day out in the sun when your skin needs that moisture boost and calming effect.

Ingredients in Sacred Truth Fresh Face Mask:

Ginko Leaf and Brown Linseed Infusion, Kaolin, Talc, Honey, Fresh Papaya, Glycerine, Yoghurt, Free Range Egg, Shea Butter, Evening Primrose Oil, Lanolin, Bentonite Gel, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Ginseng Root Powder, Green Tea Powder, Fresh Wheatgrass, Bee Pollen, Ylang Ylang Oil, Rose Absolute, Lavender Oil, Rosewood Oil, *Benzyl Salicylate, *Geraniol, *Benzyl Benzoate, *Farnesol, *Limonene, *Linalool, Perfume.

*Occurs naturally in essential oils.

Sometimes we wish we had more time to take beautiful photos ourselves for this blog or do fun tutorials, so when Australian jewellery brand Samantha Wills asked us to take part in their first ever Bloggers Edit we couldn’t help but jump at the opportunity to STYLE! SHOOT! EDIT! With some of our favourite pieces from their new Portraits of Dusk collection.

We were given 100% creative control and due some torrential rain in Sydney last week we never got around to posing in front of the camera ourselves. So instead we culled some of the clothes and shot our Samantha Wills pieces with some of our favourite fashionable and beautiful things.

If you like our photos, vote for them individually over on the Samantha Wills Facebook page now!

There is so much written about bucket lists these days and one of the most common points on the list is travel. I know travel ranks highly on my ‘things I must do soon’ list, admittedly I’ve done pretty well having hit Italy and the West Coast of America in the last 10 months. But what about travelling and shopping in my own backyard? It’s hardly factored in my thoughts if I had to be extremely honest. So when Tourism NSW contacted me to see if I would be interested in taking part in a fashionable shopping trip around Sydney and New South Wales as part of their Youth Program Blogger Tour, I couldn’t refuse.

A few small facts you should know:

Much like a mystery tour, I was going to find out where to go via Twitter from Tourism NSW’s fashion ambassador, Nikki Hager, designer and founder of Peeptoe Shoes as the day progressed.

Little did I know that I would be trailed around by a videographer and photographer than should have been in front of the camera themselves, but more on that later.

We were able to bring our lovely friend Michelle along with us to make it a fun girls/shopping trip.

DAY 1 – SHOPPING IN SYDNEY

@PeepToe_Tweets Says: To kick off our tour, what better then go to the markets on a day like this. @sassybella head to Paddington Markets for a morning shop!

Known for being the starting points in the life of brands like Dinosaur Designs and Willow, the Paddington markets on Oxford St in Paddington, NSW has a mixed bag when it comes to market stalls. Up and coming designers are mixed in with homewares and touristy nick nacks, making it an interesting market you visit once every few months.

Personally we prefer the Surry Hills Markets, Kirribilli Markets and the Glebe Markets if you’re looking for a great vintage fashion find. The prices vary depending on the stalls, but even the crowds are cooler.

@PeepToe_Tweets Says: Hey @sassybella whilst in Paddington head to the @IntersectionPad cnr of Glenmore rd and Oxford st AMAZING shops including PeepToe.

I kind of love The Interesection so I was ecstatic that Nikki gave me instructions to head down there after a quick browse through the markets. A busy intersection for traffic, it features several of my favourite stores, including Scanlan & Theordore, Willow, Zimmermann, Marnie Skillings, World, Camilla and Marc, Sass & Bide and Kit Cosmetics.

Under instruction to check out the PeepToe Shoes Boutique, we went in and fell in love with one of the neck pieces and tried on some red suede pumps. We asked our Twitter followers if we should buy them and the resounding answer was YES! Ah shopping under public pressure, it’s not good for the bank balance.

After that we popped into Marnie Skillings, who’s Autumn/Winter collection I kind of adore. It was full of beautiful soft knits and fantastic prints The store manager was the sweetest thing ever and let me try on a zillion things before I finally decided on two dresses. The credit card was getting a serious work out and I had only followed two tweets!

@PeepToe_Tweets Says: Hope u shopped up a storm @IntersectionPad @sassybella time 2 head 2 style central @westfieldsyd serious designer duds and ZARA!!

Michelle had never been inside the new Zara Sydney store, so I was looking forward to dragging her around and giving her an armful of clothes to try on since she hadn’t bought anything yet. But then security at Zara said no filming, so no filming meant not going in at all. But their loss was everyone else’s gain because we popped upstairs to check out Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg and Mulberry. I think I picked up every single one of the Mulberry bags and thought about which one I should add to my handbag collection next – when I win the lottery. Alas I had to walk away empty handed, but I could have blown more than a few months rent in Westfield Sydney – from the looks of all the shoppers, a few people were!

@PeepToe_Tweets Says:Head off to lunch! @sassybella in the Strand Arcade is 1 of Sydney’s best Italian restaurants Pendolino! U must try the risotto

Pretty soon we were given instructions to head off to lunch, but before we made it there, I was accosted by a girl who was handing out free hugs in the Pitt St Mall. She and her friend had taken inspiration from the Juan Mann who started the worldwide phenomenon back in 2004 on the very same street.

After getting a big bear hug we popped into The Strand for lunch followed by a much needed coffee for energy. Then we attacked the stores inside The Strand – home to Bettina Liano, Aesop, The Corner Shop, Manning Cartell, Fleur Wood, Jayson Brunsdon, Alex Perry and Akira.

So much fun, but no time to try anything on because…

@PeepToe_Tweets Says: Hey @sassybella it’s time to hit the road & head to the Southern Highlands 4 a stylish mini getaway! Avis on William has the car, drive to the Gibraltar Hotel when u get to Bowral! Enjoy ur stay.

Road trip!

It was time to pick up the car, grab my overnight bag (which included one too many outfits – and I still forgot to bring boots) and drive down to Bowral in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Before this trip I had only heard about Bowral in passing for its vintage shops and being the location of the Sir Donald Bradman Oval (yes, I know a thing or two about the sport they call cricket) so I was really excited to finally get to see it. An hour and a half later, we arrived at the beautiful Gibraltar Hotel Bowral and checked into our gorgeous room before ducking out to have dinner at the Suttons Forest Inn with the photographer boys – Chris Grainger and Andrew Kaineder, check them out below setting up a shot at The Strand.

Suttons Forest Inn is a lovely homely pub with an open fire and a great pub menu, but what took the cake for us was the bar area where the locals came to singe karaoke on a Saturday. We were told that in the day time, the back of the establishment looks out towards Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban‘s property in the Southern Highlands – but unfortunately they weren’t in town so popping by was out of the questions.

Stay tuned for Part 2, our tour of the Southern Highlands of NSW.

Photos of us shopping were taken by Andrew Kaineder.
