The inspiration for the Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2012 collection was 1920′s dance, Marc wanted “the feel of a Southern dance hall”. Dresses and skirts fell just bellow the knee, had fringing and sequins, but were made modern with the use of material. From gauzy sheer polyester to shiny satin, often in a check print. There were also imitation crocodile leather skirts, most notably in yellow, which is emerging as the colour for Spring.

This collection contrasted dramatically with the Marc by Marc Jacobs line, which a younger and sportier direction.

Colour blocking was the name of the game, but instead of going for blocks of colour with prints or clashing colours, the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2012 collection teamed highlighter orange or vermilion with navy, emerald green with black or lined coats with bright colours to add an extra pop. The sporty edge transferred into the collection with perspex visors as head wear and bags were large cabas style or draw string pouches in bright reds or greens. There were also several very wearable striped t-shirt dresses, but only one print which was a purple, red and green parrot print. The collection overall played it safe and was slightly disappointing for Marc Jacobs fans who were left craving something more.

Our pick of the collection were the 3 swims suits – one pieces in a 50s style, that came in a stripe, parrot print or hot red with navy detail.

Oscar de la Renta‘s Spring/Summer 2012 collection had a distinctly youthful feel to it, mostly thanks to the vibrant shades of yellow, chartreuse and coral he used for cream-puff ball gowns teamed with cropped tulle embroidered tops. The collection flowed from ball gowns to just bellow the knee dresses and loose pants with cropped jackets. Many of the dresses were white or pale lemon, in battenburg lace or cotton voile and matched with blazers cut in a style reminiscent of Chanel. All of which are emerging as key trends for this season. De la Rentra finished the show returning to what he is renowned for, with several very wearable evening dresses to suit either a cocktail party or a black tie event.

It was a rather glitzy affair with a young celebrity front row, including the likes of Justin Timberlake, Ashley Olsen and Niki Minaj making an appearance, not to mention fashion designer Valentino Garavani who was present too.

Our pick? A strapless black and white below the knee dress with ostrich feather bead embellishment or floor length silk-taffeta gown in coral.

Bows and ruffles were centre stage at Badgely Mischka‘s Spring Summer 2012 collection in New York this week. Bows were applied as part of the bodice or as a simple ribbon tied around the waist and ruffles highlighted a distinctly feminine silhouette. The collection was bursting with colour, with a pallet ranging from bright orange, to aqua, to hot pink, all of which are key colours for this season. Prints also played an important role, updated by Badgely and Mischka’s use of fabric, from silk sateen to damask. The gowns were not all floor length, many finished just bellow the knee, overall giving the collection a fresher and lighter feel.

Another surprise was among the stunning evening gowns were a selection of shorts and play suits, a bold break from their traditional evening wear. Leather also was included in the collection, in particular a rich lemon strapless dress and aqua biker jacket. However the collection finished up with several stunning floor length nude gowns with hints of gold and silver. Our pick – a nude silk chiffon gown with leaf embellishment or a tiered ruffled gown with sheer neckline and bead embellishment.

We can just see Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen walking the red carpet in it. Though Mary-Kate may team it with some Dr Martens or unkept hair.

After providing bloggers with some very wise words, Diane Von Furstenburg presented a stunning Affrican-inspired spring/summer 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week. The show began with her signiture wrap dresses in crisp white and sleek black and white prints with hemlines falling distinctly lower, just bellow the knee. What made the collection pop (and what drew Oscar de La Rentra and Valentino) was the mix tribal prints with colour blocking; using colours such as orange and aqua- which are emerging as key colours for the season. The variations of prints were endless, drawing on what DVF is known for, from retro orange to pale lime prints, to gingham checked shorts. Peach also featured in the collection, mixed in with soft lilac prints. Nude prints were not forgotten either, given evening wear status with silver sequins.

Another notable mention goes to the accessories from the crystal encrusted heels to over sized clutches, in particular an orange, black and cream envelope clutch.

In a fitting end to the show and as a gesture of remebrance for those who lost their lives on September 11, Diane personally handed out mini US flags.

As his show ended with a thunder of applause, it was clear that his collection and talent as a designer has landed him at the top of New York’s up and coming to watch. Though some critics weren’t his biggest fans, the Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show at New York Fashion Week showed off his new take on embellishment and detail, but instead of traditional sparkling beading, Gurung used recycled rubber sequins which gave a much more modern edge to the collection. These sequins, cut in all different shapes, were applied to nude dresses and sheer fluoro floor length gowns. Shades of violet and aqua featured predominately in the collection, in particular a purple sheer wool floor length gown, with the rubber embellishment cut to imitate feathers.

Prabal further showed off his talent as a designer using sheer panelling for effect on the edges of a number of dresses in monochrome black and white and also in purple and prints and thigh-high side splits to the side . Our pick of the show? A black and white tuxedo jacket or sheer nude embellished dress.

The inspiration for Alexander Wang‘s SS 2012 collection was clear from the start of the show: Motor Cross and BMX. This translated into a collection with a futuristic edge, mesh cut-outs and a sporty feel. Picking up some of the key trends for spring and summer like fluro brights; Wang used mesh was used in jackets, pants and skirts to layer over eye-popping orange and vibrant purple. Layering was also cleverly used over prints and the application of BMX and Motor cross arrow symbols in orange and aqua over white dresses and jumpers gave an almost tribal feel to the collection at times.

What particularly caught attention were the drawstring dresses complete with plastic zips, that are functional (this is part of Wang’s philosophy behind his collections also) complete with multiple pockets to add to detail. They would make a perfect addition to a summer wardrobe and a change from the maxi dress.

A more matured collection, we feel like we’re growing up with Alexander Wang too. Only with not as much cool-factor.

New York Fashion Week is here again marking the beginning of the Spring/Summer 2011 collections and fashion-packed September. As we eagerly anticipate the shows in London, Paris and Milan, New York‘s fashion week began with a stunning collection by BCBG Max Azria. With silk the main fabric of choice, the collection had a sleek and modern theme with an edge of tribal. The first pieces to grace the runway featured floaty silhouettes, with dresses being mostly knee-length and with side splits. The base of the palette was white marked with slashes of bright colour like orange, fluro yellow or peach used in piping on the edges of dresses or as part of the neck line detail. As the show progressed, dresses were the main feature, with maxis still present and a tribal print was introduced to add interest to the block colours. Present at the show were Elisha Cuthbert and Sophie Bush. Our pick of the collection? A white halter dress with sapphire and black detail on the neck line.

Another designer that presented a stand-out show was Richard Chai. His use of masculine shapes combined with eye popping oranges and blue lips presented an off-beat collection that was actually very wearable. His use op stripe prints – yellow and black and violet, green and black matched with a longer length on dresses created an almost back school feel. The peach and pewter blue floral print that also featured heavily in the collection was applied to dresses, skirts, men’s shirts and even bike pants brought a feeling of Spring is here, but what really stood out was the use of orange. In particular an orange mini dress with zip detail, which is also our pick of the collection.
