Girl’s guide to beard maintenance for men

When it comes to male beauty, what do women really need to know? Cologne, check. Shaving gel/crème instead of soap, check. Deodorant, check. Semi-regular haircuts, check. Face cream and wash, check. But what about their beards? Since women don’t tend to grow beards, moustaches, ‘flava savers’ or long side burns, it can be hard to navigate the world of men’s facial hair.

We spoke to David Rafter, founder of organic beard care brand D&T (and brother of Australian tennis champ, Pat) about why men should look after their facial hair. “I actually didn’t think looking after your facial hair was important until I had one,” Rafter says. “Mine started growing weird in different places, and my skin would get so dry. Looking after your beard makes all the differences. It makes a good beard look great!”

It makes sense you know, anyone can tell if women’s hair is poorly looked after – whether it be unbrushed, unwashed or needing a trim badly – so of course we can tell if men’s facial and head hair is also just as unkept.

“For the girls out there, they would totally notice if a beard wasn’t looked after. All the beards they see that look good are totally being looked after. I never used to go to a barber, now I go like once a month. I grew a beard because I didn’t really care, but it has made me care even more.”

“Cultivating your beard makes all the difference. I will comb my beard at least 2 to 3 times a day, as well as use some of the beard oils before bed. All the girls know about looking after their hair. Well, for us boys there is not much difference. We will get dry skin, dead hair. To ensure your beard looks awesome, you gotta take care of it!”

1. A beard trimmer: Remington VacGroom 2-in-1 Beard Trimmer

We all hate seeing the bathroom sink and surround areas covered in beard hair after a guy trims or shaves his beard, so this is where the Remington VacGroom 2-1 Beard Trimmer is the best thing ever. This electronic beard trimmer trims and shapes beards without the post-shave clean-up with its in-built vacuum. It comes with two vacuum attachments, including a 32mm trimmer for maintaining length and thickness, and a 16mm detail head for shaping and detailing. The extra features we love is the rechargeable lithium-powered battery and worldwide voltage so men can keep their bearded look even on holidays.

2. Moisturiser: L’Oreal Men Expert 3-Day Beard Moisturiser

Looking for a moisturiser that penetrates under your 3-5 day beard while still looking after your skin? We love the L’Oreal Men Expert 3 Day Beard Moisturiser. Enriched with vitamin E and facial hair softener, the formula instantly makes the beard and your man’s skin soft, supple and smooth.

3. Cleanser: L’Oreal Men Expert Pure Power Scrub x2000

What they don’t tell you about facial hair is that natural facial oils and food can get clogged within the pores and hair, so it is important to use a cleanser that is effective while being gentles enough for daily use. We love the L’Oreal Men Expert Pure Power Scrub x2000, with 3 types of different sized beads, the intense cleansing action washes away oil and dirt to unclog pores and help protect against the appearance of future blackheads and pimples.

4. Beard Oil: D&T Original Blend Beard Oil

“Beard oils are amazing at getting under the hair and onto the skin,” says David Rafter. “It helps to levitate dry skin, reduces itchiness.” D+T Organic’s beard oil uses base oils like Argan oil which is great for generating stronger growth as well as jojoba and sweet almond oil which is good for the skin. With extra addition of lemon myrtle which is great for cleansing and ginger which helps to fight depression and clears drys skin. The product is also 100% organic, vegan and cruelty free.
