Australian label Sass & Bide consistently creates a seamless fusion between innate femininity and strong structure, with their seventh show at London Fashion Week delivering on both accounts. Stemming from a focus on “internal structures and mechanics,” designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton have delivered an Autumn/Winter 2013 collection that exudes a tension between monochromatic simplicity and brave injections of yellow. The collection amalgamates tough, metal work and embellishment with an effortless utilisation of fluid, feminine fabrics.

Transporting three distinct, but cohesive explorations of “industrial frameworks… sensualized by contrasting elements of nature,” Sass & Bide have produced a collection that is continuing to set a high standard for Australian designers. The opening looks of their collection revolved around slouchy metallic knits, tailored jackets and skirts, with an explicit punch of patent yellow pieces. The shapes of the garments possessed an exemplary balance between sharp tailoring and pieces with a natural fluidity. The succeeding looks showcased a solely black palette, which formed the basis for experimentation with the label’s iconic use of cut-outs  alongside a strong use of metal work and embellishments. This metallic decoration continued, with a base of pure white and strategically placed sheer-cut-outs.

Sass & Bide have produced a futuristic and fresh approach to the classic shapes of the 60s, with accents of the 70s discernible in the final looks. With their innovative use of industrial elements, Clarke and Middleton have proven that Australian designers are rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with. I’m sure their celebrity front row Olivia Palermo, Mary Charteris, Pixie Lott, Lara Bohinc, Tallulah Harlech and Portia Freeman featuring agrees.

As well as executing a brilliantly cohesive collection, the label introduced #instawalk, which allowed viewers to display their interest in a piece via Twitter as it hit the runway. Entitled Wintergate, Sass & Bide’s collection is a stunning blend of well-shaped basics and statement pieces that are enticing us into the winter months.
