New York Fashion Week S/S 2013: Karen Walker comes of age with her latest ready-to-wear collection

We love Karen Walker for her quirky, girly and easy-to-wear designs, and she has once again impressed us with her collection at New York Fashion Week. This was the 21st season that Walker has shown in an international fashion show, and it was only fitting that it occurred in America, where the age one is recognised as an adult is 21. It’s official: the Karen Walker label has grown up.

The Fantastique Magnifique ready-to-wear stayed within Walker’s safety zone, and we would eventually like to see her push her boundaries as a designer a little more. We still enjoyed the bright coloured designs, with blues, pinks, golds, silvers and oranges being the dominant hues. Like with several other collections shown in New York, there were flashes of metallic featured on shirts and skirts. And where Marc Jacobs went for stripes, Walker has done the opposite with spots, and the overall result was adorable.

The tailoring was loose and comfortable, with high-waisted pants, classic A-line roomy shirts and knee-length skirts featuring heavily. Models donned the designer’s favourite brand of shoes, Beau Coops, with the marriage between Walker’s designers and her favourite shoes being one of simple perfection.

While the collection may not have taken our breath away, it was signature Karen Walker, and that’s enough for us to enjoy.
