New York Fashion Week S/S 2013: Holmes & Yang debut their collection with classic charm

This was the debut collection that had everyone talking. Katie Holmes, (fresh from her intriguing and not entirely unexpected divorce from Tom Crusie), and her design partner Jeanne Yang, debuted their Holmes & Yang collection with smart classics. Smart move, we think.

Starting quiet and with a subtle presentation rather than a glitzy catwalk, the collection offered wide-legged trousers, leather jackets, smart cardigan-style sweaters and sophisticated dresses ranging in length and movement. Splashes of leather toughened up the otherwise unadventurous collection, adding a much-needed move away from the safety zone.

That’s not to say that we didn’t appreciate the classic route taken by Holmes and Yang to begin with- we would have been shocked if they debuted a feisty collection in a showoff manner. Our favourite look was a flowing olive green maxi skirt, which when paired with a black leather cami, was the perfect blend of edgy and casual chic.

Much like Whitney Port’s collection at MBFWA earlier this year, the presentation style of the line allowed the designers to mingle with the crowd and win over potential new fans of the brand.

The foundations for exciting new collections are certainly in place, with the classics being the core of the line- for now. Give them some time, and we can’t wait to see what Holmes & Yang have to offer us.
