New York Fashion Week S/S 2013: Day 1 signals the beginning of a fashion frenzy

If you’re in New York, Milan, Paris or London over the next four weeks, it might be a good idea to swap your stilettos for flats for a day or two… your feet will need a rest. Fashion month is officially here, with New York Fashion Week starting things off, and we can’t wait to see what trends emerge.

BCBG Max Ariza channeled a combination of soft and feminine looks and (dare we say it?) perhaps a nod to 50 Shades of Grey. Can we go nowhere without hearing about that book?! Figure-hugging black leather harnesses that Christian Grey would approve of were worn underneath floaty, sheer dresses. It was an interesting combination of hard and soft chic that somehow combined to create an edgy look that we, well, kind of liked. It looks like women are set to embrace a tough and no nonsense approach to fashion, a la a stylish Ana Steele, but with a girly side. Bring in the lace and chiffon and you have next season’s latest look.

Brother-sister design duo Christopher and Nicholas Kunz showcased trendy comfort, with a muted palette ruling the  Nicholas K runway. Camel, khaki, beige and brown look set to be hues of choice next season, with Nicholas telling AFP that designers are going back to a more “organic kind of lifestyle.” And if you’re not similar to Kate Moss in stature and hate wearing skinny jeans? (That’s me!) Good news: the floaty, boho look will be trickling its way back into fashion, with Nicholas saying that she is “over the skinny legs look.”

And it doesn’t stop there. Many designers have chosen to live stream their collections via YouTube, their websites and Facebook pages, and big screens outside of the Lincoln Centre, where many shows are held. So don’t worry if you’re not lucky enough to score an invite to the show- where there’s a will, there’s a way, after all. But because all shows are streamed on NYC time, be sure to have a caffeine hit at the ready if you’re wanting to check out a late show.

If this is sounding overwhelming already, don’t forget that last night was Vogue Fashion’s Night Out in NYC, with a slew of designers taking part in the festivities. Tasted a cupcake baked by model Karlie Kloss herself? Yum, yum. Got your September issue of Vogue signed by Anna Wintour and Victoria Beckham? You must have been at Bergdorf’s. Sipping on mini bottles of Moet? That was at our very own Zimmermann. And Oscar de la Renta serenading Sarah Jessica Parker? All we can say is, we have a feeling it’s going to be a good month.
