Mezi designers talk about their We Are Handsome MBFWA collaboration and jewellery design

Sometimes opposites attract and come together to great amazing things. Case in point, Mezi jewellery and We Are Handsome. One is known of their amazing antique inspired jewellery, while the other designs swimwear that has been seen on the likes of Rihanna and sells out on Net-A-Porter.com. The two Australian brands came together for their first Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia debut on May 3, 2012 and we spoke with sisters Adva Punin and Tal Manning, the designers behind Mezi about the collaboration.

How did the collaboration with We Are Handsome come about?

We have always been massive fans of We Are Handsome and with Mezi moving into colour for SS12/13 we felt it was a great opportunity to get on board with We Are Handsome. We designed one off pieces for We Are Handsome which is bold, bright and full of energy which sits perfectly with their fun and vibrant collection.

What was the inspiration behind the pieces?

The Mezi SS12/13 collection is full of colour with a touch of poolside glamour so our wearable statement jewellery was a perfect match for We Are Handsome. We are very excited about the injection of colour into this season’s collection and can’t wait for it to hit the stores.

What is your approach to designing jewellery?

We wanted to create beautiful pieces of jewellery that didn’t compromise on quality or design. We place great emphasis on wearable, statement pieces which has become signature to the Mezi design.

Our very stylish mother has been a massive inspiration to us over the years so it was only natural to name the brand after her. Our Moroccan and Egyptian heritage also plays a big part in Mezi and our love for travelling and all things glam.

How was your MBFWA backstage experience?

We loved it; it was great to be behind the scenes. The models looked amazing, there was a real vibe and buzz and we got some great snaps of the collection and models.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us ladies!

What do you think of the new design direction Mezi are taking?
