Paris Haute Couture S/S 2012: Come fly away with Chanel

King Karl has done it again. Throughout the Chanel haute couture show in Paris, he reminded us why he has the Midas touch with fashion, successfully created a fashion wonderland to showcase his latest designs. Nothing is too much for Karl Lagerfeld, and this time, he ordered the construction of a jet, which took five days to construct and was complete with numbered seats and a transparent roof, which revealed clouds above showgoers heads, and whisked the fashion set away to another world. The show then took its audience on a long-haul Chanel flight, travelling through the House’s day wear designs first, eventually working the way through to evening wear. Lagerfeld’s designs were simple and elegant; classic Chanel, with delicate hues once again making an appearance in the latest Paris shows. Perhaps a throwback to 1960s air hostesses, Lagerfeld presented slim dresses that fell just above the knee with simplistic embroidery as the models  strutted the airplane aisle-come-runway.

Said Lagerfeld of the show: “I’m bored with the red carpet, so why not a blue carpet?” But it wasn’t just the carpet, which was monogrammed with the House’s signature double C logo, that was blue. Throughout the collection’s 60 looks, Lagerfeld showcased a staggering 150 shades of blue, ranging from sky blue to deep navy- looks like we know what colour is set to be huge this season! Any embroidery seen on the chic silhouettes of the designs was also done in blue, and consisted of variations of beads, stones and sequins. Lagerfeld maintained he wanted each of his couture looks to have the relaxed approach to fashion akin to jeans, and as a result model walked with their hands slouched in the pockets of their outfits. As always, the designs were elegant, and this time around more simplistic than usual, which only allowed them to appear all the more graceful and sophisticated.

With Lagerfeld emerging from the captains cockpit at the conclusion of the show, this is definitely one plane ride we would love to take.
