Not for the faint hearted: Peruvian gangs drained human fat for use in cosmetics

lard-smallHere’s a story that will have you second guessing the makeup you put on this morning… Associated Press are reporting that police have just arrested some men in Peru who have been “killing people and draining fat from the corpses to sell on the black market for use in cosmetics”.

Bet you put down your morning coffee after reading that line. We don’t have to rush into switching to beauty products that don’t use animal products (though it is recommended for other reasons) because medical experts say there probably isn’t a major market for human fat. The suspects in the case were arrested carring bottles of liquid human fat and told police it was worth $60,000 a gallon ($15,000 a litre) and was set to be sold in Lima and eventually passed on to cosmetic companies in Europe.

The suspects confessed to killing five people and draining their bodies of fat, but the police suspect that dozens more people were kidnapped and murdered for the same purpose.

I’ll spare you the rest of the gory details but you can check out the rest of the article here.
