Known for designing some ultra cool shades for the likes of Beyonce Knowles (for her Diva music video) and Kylie Minogue (for her In Your Arms music video), Ksubi are gearing up to release a new eye wear collection with TIGA.

TIGA, a popular Montreal-based DJ is known for his break out hit, Sunglasses at Night (with the music video staring Amanda Lepore) doesn’t ordinarily wear sunglasses, but found the time to design frames which were inspired by the scientist look of the 1950s with hints of new wave modernism. The outcome was four different acetate coloured frames with the option of sun and optical lenses.

“Tiga’s original brief was for the frames to be made from chicken bones, with the finish of a silver Ferrari” Ksubi’s George Gorrow said. “Whilst I understood where he was coming from aesthetically, I’m a vegetarian and couldn’t put design in front of my beliefs. In the end we settled for hand-made acetate frames, constructed in Japan.”

In an interview with Ksubi’s Dan Single, TIGA said he hated sunglasses because they get between him and the sun, with his last sunglasses purchase was twenty years ago.

“When I was in Hong Kong with my parents in ’89 I had a pair of Armani’s,” TIGA said. “They were like almost John Lennon [like] and my mom bought the same pair. It don’t get more badass than buying Armani’s in the Kong in ’89 with your mom.”

And about his design for Ksubi?

“Cos I never wore a pair of sunglasses in my life, my design is essentially random. It’s like they were designed by a lunatic.”

The TIGA for Ksubi sunglasses collaboration will be released worldwide in March 2009 – after Kanye West’s Pastelle for Ksubi collaboration is released this month.
