The movers & shakers, winners & losers of the model universe, July edition

The second week of the month isn’t even over yet and there’s already been plenty of news, scandals, and developments within the modeling and celebrity campaign realm. Below are some highlights:

Lily Cole and singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor join Kate Moss as Rimmel London’s latest spokesmodels. The commercials have already started filming, as the stunning Miss Ellis-Bextor demonstrated for paparazzi in a splashy scene on a London bus. While Kate remains on board, these new glamorous additions to the Rimmel face family allow the cosmetic brand to pitch a more dynamic appeal. Coty’s senior VP Stephen Mormoris believes the trio of trendsetting women all represent a particular Rimmel customer: “We believe our consumers will identify with both new signings and this, combined with the iconic qualities of Kate Moss, who has more than proven herself as the face of Rimmel, will see the brand create even more standout this autumn with their new campaigns.” Plus, it’s never a bad idea to stir things up with Kate Moss.

Vivacious British model Jodie Kidd has been fired for allowing her curves to get the better of her. As the weight war silently rages on behind fashion’s velvet rope, Jodie has become its latest casualty. It appears this particular model could not be afforded the same accommodations as the similarly curvy Miss Cole. While Lily’s agent vouched for her, Kidd’s gave her the boot. Admittedly, Jodie has faced previous fallout for an earlier drug scandal. But given the nature of the industry, it’s obvious that her sudden weight gain is the greater offense.

The latest winner of ‘Britain’s Next Top Model’ has her work cut out for her. 19-year-old Alex Evans has been crowned ‘Britain’s Next Top Model’. She will sign a contract with Models 1 and will star in a Max Factor campaign. And of course, as tradition dictates, she will receive a cover spread in a second-rate publication – in this case, COMPANY. In any case, will this pretty Briton transcend the indifference and stigma attached to the Top Model franchise? We’ll get back to you in six months. In the mean time: Good luck, Ali.

Gossip Girl actress Taylor Momsen has scored an illustrious contract with IMG Models. The leggy 14 year old (!) has become the latest celebrity addition to IMG’s roster, which also includes the likes of Leigh Lezark, Hilary Duff, and Drew Barrymore. Hmm, wonder if Blake Likely and Leighton Meester suddenly feel a bit envious of their junior colleague? Not to worry: the entire cast was featured in People’s World’s Most Beautiful People list earlier this year.

NME reports that Agent Provocateur have their eyes on none other than the strikingly fierce Alison Mosshart, singer of the Kills, for their next ad campaign. The raven-haired beauty is no stranger to the fashion scene, as she’s often the focus of many an alternative fashion magazine spread. In addition, she’s even modeled for J. Lindeberg. If you are aware of the drama currently surrounding The Kills’ Jamie Hince and Kate Moss, you can appreciate the irony of his bandmate (who was often critical of the supermodel’s disruption of the band dynamic) possibly replacing the recently ousted Kate as a spokesmodel for the edgy lingerie brand. The plot thickens.

Marilyn’s latest pride and joy, Arlenis Sosa, has purportedly already signed on with Lancôme as the star of their next campaign. Congratulations, Arlenis! She’s already well on her way to supermodel status only a few months into her career!
