Maybelline Dial-A-Lash and Waterbourne Eye Shadow vintage television ads

A mascara that lets you choose the level of thickness applied to you lashes? Once upon a time Maybelline use to have a mascara like that. Check out this ad for Maybelline New York’s Dial-A-Lash masacara, it’s circa 1982.

I actually remember one of my aunt’s owning this in the early 1990s and thought it was the coolest thing – question is, who’s the model? It’s definitely interesting to see the faces of Maybelline before the likes of Christy Turlington, Erin Wasson, Adriana Lima and Sarah Michelle Gellar joined the ranks.

When you come back from the 1980s flashback of this vintage Maybelline television commercial, let’s go back to 1971. Check out Maybelline’s Waterbourne eye shadow ad.

The colours are all “borne of the sea” and each compact comes with a colour mixing well. Just check out the eye shadow being applied on the model – we’re definitely checking out an ad from the 1970s. Who starts applying eye shadow from the brow down to the eye anymore? Unless you’re putting on make up like Cleopatra, no one.

The models name is Joan Severence (I think that’s how it’s spelled). She later went into acting.

Wish they didn’t discontinue the Dial-A-Lash – it would save me having about 10 different mascara’s for different purposes! And you’re right, the eyeshadow application is scary.

  • Marie says:

…I’d never heard of the product – but I was born in the ’80s so thats my excuse!

  • KAREN VILLANEDA says:

    Can dial-a-lash be purchased?
