Helen’s 2 cents worth: Another reality TV show aims to better the ugly
Is there a secret no-fail way to pitch any old idea of a reality tv show? Because it seems that’s all we see on TV these days. Like we don’t see enough of people put in strange situations already thanks to Survivor, Big Brother, The Hills, and etc. Personally, I hate the idea of Big Brother and have not watched more than 10 minutes of any season of it in Australia, and somehow I don’t think I’ll be watching Jane magazine’s founder, Jane Pratt’s new show, American Ugly.
Pratt has teamed up with “stylist-turned-actor” Phillip Bloch for a VH1 reality show where “they advise unfashionable women on how to run a fashion magazine.”
According to PageSix, they’ve already taped the pilot for the show. “The name is a mix of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and ‘Ugly Betty,’ ” said an insider, adding that the par ticipating women “are just the saddest bunch. These people not only needed fashion tips, they needed an entire mental makeover. Not one could possibly run a magazine. They were delusional.”
At the end of the day, to work in the magazine industry, you have to have some brains and wits about you. And from the “insider’s” quotes, it doesn’t look like the women they’ve chosen has much of both. Beauty and a great fashion wardrobe can be brought (especially in today’s day and age of extreme makeovers, reality television style) if you want to work in magazines, but you can never buy the brains.
